Welcome to French 9! I am looking forward to our year long option, as Grade 9 students prepare for their futures with French!
My background in this language is that I have bilingual certification from taking French Immersion through my own CBE schooling. I spent a semester at the Universite a Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, and have traveled in France. Since becoming a teacher, I have taught French as a Second Language and have recently finished my training for Intensive and Post-Intensive French. Other significant language learning includes having backpacked through several Spanish speaking countries, including Cuba and Guatemala, and having pursued Italian. I am also the English Language Learning contact at Nose Creek, and so have pursued professional development in language developement. I try to follow the neuro-linguistic approach to language learning, which focuses primarily on developing oral language, and then building in reading and writing skills.
Our skills and fluency vary in our class of 20ish students from beginner to very fluent. Many students wish to work on improving their reading and writing in French. Along with following curriculum and suggestions from Crescent Heights High School in order to prepare the students for their futures in French, we will also try to pursue student areas of interests in conjunction with this learning.
This first week we set ourselves up on Duolingo, which supports reading and writing in other languages. We played "Quelle heure-est-il M. ou Mme. Loup" and gathered information on student interests, strengths, challenges and why they chose this option. Next week we will review numbers, have conversations about our daily events and move into our first project.
