Above is the drawing Ms. Rishaug completed on the whiteboard, while students read out loud to her a passage from "The Wounded Cormorant". Please note - no artistic talent was necessary for this activity. Cough.
Language Arts Today we began looking at the skill of visualizing while reading. This is an important skill that is a large part of reading comprehension. Hum teachers introduced this topic through a series of discussions such as The Flower Activity, and through the use of of a passage from "The Wounded Cormorant". All grade 8 classed will be working with Ms. Rishaug on Friday (except her homeroom, which will work with her next week) to continue on with our visualizing work. All grade 8 students will be working with Ms. Midyette on Friday to get set up for Read Theory (except Ms. Midyette's homeroom - again, they will get a chance next week). Social Studies Over the past few days students have been examining Canadian worldviews, through critical thinking activities, hands on sorting activities, and class discussions. We'll continue this work next week! *** Important Dates Monday, Sept 16th - River Watch Field Trip Thursday, Sept 19th - Meet the Teacher Night @ 6pm Friday, Sept 20th - Non Instruction Day (No Students) Wednesday, Oct 2nd - Photo Day

Above is the Reading Legend that students will use frequently in class.
Language Arts Over the course of the next several days, students will read the short story, "The Transformations of Cindy R". Today (Monday) students will be completing a Reading Legend for this story, on a separate piece of paper. We'll continue working with this story throughout the week through discussion questions, comparing Cindy R to the traditional fairy tale of Cinderella, and through a collaborative plot diagram. Social Studies Our first topic in Social Studies 8 is a mini unit entitled Worldviews. Today students wrote down a definition for worldviews, and we discussed the various worldviews that we are a part of (eg. Canadian worldviews). We then addressed the question, "What significant life events impact our individual worldviews" and brainstormed ideas together as a group. We'll continue working with worldviews this week through critical thinking challenges and examining Canadian worldviews more closely. *** Important Dates Thursday, Sept 19th - Meet the Teacher Night @ 6pm Friday, Sept 20th - Non Instruction Day (No Students) Wednesday, Oct 2nd - Photo Day We've had an awesome first week in Grade 8 Humanities! This upcoming week, we look forward to diving into our academic year - and we KNOW that students can't wait too ;) .
Language Arts Students were introduced to short stories through various activities in their Hum 8 classes. Students discussed short story facts, and what makes a short story important. This upcoming week we'll be reading "The Transformations of Cindy R". Social Studies Our first topic in Social Studies 8 is a mini unit entitled Worldviews, for the month of September. We completed a "Who in the World" activity, where students had to guess important figures in culture and history. We then discussed why students (and teachers too) often more easily recognize pop culture figures, than people who have made large contributions to society. *** Important Dates Thursday, Sept 19th - Meet the Teacher Night @ 6pm Friday, Sept 20th - Non Instruction Day (No Students) Wednesday, Oct 2nd - Photo Day Above: Details about the "Take Care of Me Assignment.
