COMING UP: Review Quiz #1 (factors, GCF, LCM, integer basics, add/subtract integers)
TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 26, 2017
Remember - you should do all of the "heavy lifting" before Monday - meaning you have prepared in advance and given yourself the opportunity to come in before Tuesday to ask questions, get a little bit of extra help, etc. The night before any assessment should be spent on "content review" (meaning you are not trying to 'learn something new') and focussing a little more on any topics that are a bit more challenging for you.
1.Get away from your technology (phone, computer, tablet, TV) at least an hour before you close your eyes to sleep - the light from the screens mimics daylight and acts as a stimulant. If you're having trouble falling asleep, pick up and read a book.
2.Get a good night's rest - that means at least 8 to 9 hours for someone your age.
3.Have a nutritious, filling breakfast.
4.Bring a water bottle with you.
TOPIC: Adding and Subtracting Integers (Gr7) - completed
TODAY: Factors/GCF/LCM Assignment #1 was COLLECTED MONDAY, Sept 18th. You started working on this last Wednesday. If you did not hand in a completed assignment today, or yesterday, or the day before that, or the day before that (which was Monday, the due date) it is past being "late". Please refer to the Gr8 Course Overview that is posted on the Homepage of the Gr8 Blog for details on course expectations. IF YOU DID NOT SUBMIT THIS ASSIGNMENT WITHIN THE 3 DAY "late" WINDOW, PLEASE SEE YOUR MATH TEACHER - THEY WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A BRIEF CONVERSATION WITH YOU. Thank you!
Today's class was dedicated as time for you to complete independent work - practice, refinement, and mastering addition and subtraction of integers using models (tile diagrams) and algorithms (rules or 'short-cuts') - and to get feedback. Remember to show all steps in each solution. A self-check for the tile diagrams is to ask yourself if someone else could interpret, follow, and understand your solution without seeing the original question. You may use a CALCULATOR to CHECK your work, not to do the calculations for you, please and thanks.
***Look back to the math posts for Monday and Tuesday for a refresher on integer basics, adding integers, and subtracting integers. Check out the links that have been provided for you.
Remember to check the solution keys to the assigned practice problems that we did not "spot check". These are posted on the Math8 course on D2L / Brightspace - choose "Content", choose "Review".
Students who were up-to-date with their practice work then spent some time practicing integer addition and subtraction by playing a card and dice game.
PRACTICE PROBLEMS: You should complete and check all assigned practice problems in preparation for Tuesday's quiz. Not sure? Check the blog entries from this week. Copies of all handouts are posted for you to download and print.
Reminder that in yesterday's class you were instructed to "self-select" one of the scaffolded practice sheets (see below - both sides) that you could complete successfully, but that still gave you a challenge. The point was not to choose what you thought was the "easiest" option.
DUE DATE: Monday September 25, 2017
