UNIT: Review - continued
TOPIC: GCF (Greatest Common Factor) and LCM (Lowest Common Multiple)
TODAY: Today when we reviewed the homework question we saw a clear illustration of why it's beneficial to have more than one method of solving a problem. The LCM was 360 - so if you used the "List Method", you wrote 3 loooong lists - not hard, but it took time. The "L" or "Hockey Stick Method" was not only more efficient, but you were also working with smaller numbers.
Now it's time for you to do some independent work.
There are 2 kinds of assessment - formative and summative.
Formative assessments are "for your learning" (these could be practice questions, drafts of writing, discussions, etc.) and involve feedback (self, peer, teacher) that you then incorporate into your work. This is where you practice, refine, and then master the concepts that you cover in your classes. If this work isn't done or is not done on a consistent basis, then you don't benefit from feedback.
Summative assessments "summarize your learning" (these could be tests, oral presentations, final projects, specific assignments, etc.) and give you an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of the course material (the material you have practiced, refined, and mastered) and should reflect your best work.
Today you were given a practice sheet that incorporates both formative (front) and summative (back) assessments. The class time today and tomorrow is intended for you to once again practice, refine, and master the concepts of Factors, GCF, and LCM. Show your work (using the various methods we reviewed) so that you can communicate HOW you solved the problems. If you don't show steps and your answer is incorrect, then you have no idea where and how you made a mistake and your teachers have no idea where and how you made the mistake - which means that you have to start over - at the beginning. Your work will be spot checked during tomorrow's class to see if you're on the right track. If you are, then you can complete the back of the sheet (Summative) with confidence!
PRACTICE WORK: Handout double sided - "Factors, GCF, LCM II". Continue with the assigned practice problems, keeping in mind the timeline as outlined in class. All Odd # questions have been assigned from the front. (Formative) Do these on a separate sheet of lined paper. ALL questions assigned on the back (Summative). Complete these directly on your handout.
DUE DATE: Front - keep in mind the timeline to receive feedback and complete SOME of the questions from EACH COLUMN. NOTE - You are not assigned a specific number of questions to complete for tomorrow's class - that's your decision - make a good one.
Back (Q1-9) - due Monday September 18 at the start of class.
